Almost done with Uni. The last 2 years have been enthralling! I was completely engaged in Uni life participating in all available student resources thus uplifting my uni experience beyond the norms of purely academic engagement. Have your sights focussed on appropriate goals and work towards them. Nothing is easy and disappointment will always be looming except for the well prepared
Selection process and gaining admission
Prepare everything in advance. Always run a test/ dry run where you constantly review everything. Admissions were via a one on one interview in my home country be a Deakin Rep. Selection criteria was flexible for the right candidate depending on your potential the rep can perceive in the short interview. Tips: know what you want to do and why! Convince yourself first before convincing others. And assess your strengths and weaknesses and be assertive.
Funding and scholarships
Grants were available prior to securing admission. This has to be made clear with the enrolling officer. High academic scores are instrumental in securing the right amount of grant.
Your study experience
Course: Accounting if you like it need to think like an accountant. An acquired skill. Study: study time is directly reciprocal to marks obtained. Recommended is 10 hrs a week per subject. Keeping abreast with lectures is the key essential. Tutors: Can be varied. We can have experienced lecturers with higher expectations at the same time in another semester the lecturer might just be a novice with minimal expectations. Its a trade-off that cant be helped. Support: Adequate after lecture-hours, visiting hours provide for one-to-one consultation. Value: the exchange rate makes study here quite expensive for those coming from poorer countries. However compared to other universities the course holds on par across the entire Australian board. Deakin has a high market Rep of producing capable graduates.
Your life experience
Facilities: State-of-the art. Can find mostly anuthing on campus (Burwood) Local Area: Well connected to all transport lines and shopping. And recreation Peers: Burwood is a mixed Uni neighbourhood. With everyone mostly in the same boat. All willing to befriend a newbie. Accommodation: various types of housing available. Assistance provided by Student Society. Heavy competition for the right house as heavy demand by students. A little on the steeper side. Part-time work: Takes patience and lots of work to find work ;) Student Union: Active member of a few societies and council member of 2.
Job prospects
Alumni: on the Alumni student board. Connections developed in Uni last a lifetime and are key to future employment success. It is imperative to have a well networked support group to see you through in a foreign land. Jobs: Right Jobs depend upon your eligibility to perform the job which can on some occasions depend on your visa status. Its a difficult situation where the employers needs are in direct contradiction to DIMIAs conditions. In most cases where the big 4 or larger institutions are concerned a Permanent or long term visa status is a pre-requisite.
